As a researcher of the influence that Latin American culture had on the literature and intellectual history of Japan, I joined GSICCS’s doctoral program in order to have a diverse, interdisciplinary and multilingual atmosphere geared towards the study of literature as a global phenomenon. I also found that an interdisciplinary atmosphere, with fellow PhD candidates coming from a wide range of nationalities and academic backgrounds, broadened my scope of analysis and gave me greater feedback. The possibility of getting to know fields of work and research outside of my normal sphere was especially interesting and stimulating. After my graduation I expect to become a cultural link between Japan and Latin America, both through academic activity and translation of Japanese literature. If you are looking for a school where you will be motivated to cross boundaries between disciplines and regions, then GSICCS is definitely the place for you!
