According to the mission and future of Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies (GSICCS) — “Towards a New Style of Graduate Program”, renowned for effectively dealing with contributing to society and enhancing a truly international community, GSICCS has established a vision, which deeply impresses me. Waseda University, with its unique integrated character, fruitful curriculum, and university-wide educational and student life environment, is developing various exchanges involving learning, culture, languages and values. These exchanges are aimed at the cultivation of human capitals who will contribute to global society through their own initiative. The aim of my research is to examine the effects of using English in Japanese-based multinational corporations. Having devoted myself to developing organizational communication systems for a short while along with considerable time spent in researching data customer service in systematic inductive reasoning science for the communicational sector, I developed a particular interest in integrating concepts from these two fields and, then, applying them to emerging communicational sector. These two ingredients are definitely crucial to my ability to fully realize my career aspirations. In the future after accomplishing my master study, I hope to develop a strong career as a language policy researcher, which I can contribute my dedication and scholarly vision to the field by bridging the gap between native English speakers and non-native English speakers. I am confident that GSICCS would provide me with the opportunity to equip my ability to the professional image.

  • Enrollment in September 2013
  • Study Plan:Culture & Communication

After completing my undergraduate studies from Chulalongkorn University, I decided to enroll at GSICCS because the program offers a major that I am most interested in, culture and communication, which is closely related to what I have studied for my undergraduate program, Language and Culture. Also, I particularly chose GSICCS because I have participated in an exchange program at SILS a few years back and from then on, I have always wanted to continue my graduate studies here at Waseda where there is a great faculty members as well as pleasant campus environment. I have always been interested in studying more deeply about cultural theories and here at GSICCS, in Professor Aso’s ‘Culture and Translation’ seminar, I have been taught to further enhance my knowledge regarding issues such that of: race and identity, gender, psychoanalysis, or postcolonial studies, to name a few. All of which would help me carry out my research on the topic of Demythifying Madame Butterfly Stereotypes. After completing GSICCS graduate program, I would like to continue the PhD program to further develop my Masters thesis. In the future, I hope to use the knowledge and my research to contribute to enrich the socio-cultural living condition of people especially women in my home country or perhaps to work in the academic field i.e., to teach and expand my experiences and education I learn in GSICCS at the university some day.

GSICCS is a school that pays great attention to training international capable students, which is a great attractive point that I entered here. Further, I have been very interested in the field of Professor HIGUCHI in “social study plan”. Based on these two reasons I chose GSICCS. Facts proved that during the two years of study in GSICCS, I have understood GSICCS’s philosophy of focusing on training international talents through a variety of courses. The interactions, cultural diversity and clash of ideas of students and teachers from more than 50 countries in the world provides us with a broader perspective, which will be of great significance for our further study and career development in the future. The weekly presentation we gave over the past two years of seminars together with the feedback of my adviser Professor HIGUCHI and discussion with classmates, has been of tremendous help to our research skills. As for the topic of my research is, consumer behavior of luxury goods in China, which analyzed the motivation of Chinese consumers for purchasing luxury goods in the economics and sociology perspectives.

I got the offer of IBM in the Job Hunting activity last year, which was due to the strongly support and advise from Professor HIGUCHI. The reason I chose this company is that IBM is dedicate to ‘making contributions to the society and improving human life by technology and innovation’, which attracted me most. My current career goal is to learn skills as more as possible during the first two years in order to lay a foundation for my development in the future.

My major was Japanese when I was an undergraduate student, and went to Japan as an exchange student in my junior year. I planned to go to Canada for improving English proficiency and further study after graduation. Just at that time, I found the English program from GSICCS of Waseda University which provides an international communication studies curriculum from a variety of perspective. Here I study in Professor Kondo’s seminar because I am very interested in the field of language acquisition.

Professor Kondo’s seminar mainly focuses on researches about phonetics, especially on the second-language acquisition. There are many joint study meetings with other graduate schools which are helpful for my research. I decided study on Japanese accent learning as my research theme, especially focus on the Chinese learners. It was difficult to collect and analysis the data, but with the help of Professor Kondo and other classmates, I finished my graduation thesis.

In GSSICS, I obtained not only the English proficiency and specialized knowledge, but also the ability of independent thinking and problem solving. I started job hunting during my first year, and got some offers from different industries. In the end I decided go to the Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, which I think it would be better for my future. The experience from GSICCS will be definitely helpful in the future.
