David Boyd and Motoyuki Shibata, Lecture & Conversation: Translating Japanese Literature (Authors Alive!) (6/16)

In this conversation with Professor Motoyuki Shibata, Professor David Boyd, translator of contemporary novelists from Hideo Furukawa to Hiroko Oyamada, will talk about the field of Japanese literature in English translation. Boyd will discuss passages from his forthcoming translations, including EnJoe Toh’s Dōkeshi no chō (2012) and a new translation of Osamu Dazai’s Ningen shikkaku (1948). The conversation will be followed by a brief Q&A.

David Boyd

Dr. David Boyd, Assistant Professor of Japanese, UNC Charlotte. He has translated many works of Japanese literature into English, including works by Hiroko Oyamada and Mieko Kawakami. He received the Japan-U.S. Friendship Foundation Literary Translation Award for his English translation of Hideo Furukawa’s “Slow Boat in 2002” (Slow Boat).
