Small Exhibition: “Translation wings words beyond borders”
Exhibition Overview
Translation has always had an important role in Haruki Murakami’s work.
It’s only natural that translation is also very important to the WIHL. In 2024-25 we kicked off our Translation Project, seeking to promote literature in translation, support the emergence of new translators, and contribute to a network of translators from around the world.
In 2024, we invited two translators, Polly Barton from England, and Wen Bajia from Tibet, for month-long residencies during which they spoke with readers, led workshops aimed at aspiring translators, conducted research, and held events with authors, among other activities. Their residencies marked the true start of the WIHL Translation Project.
In 2025, we welcomed two more translators-in-residence, Andriy Setiawan from Indonesia, and Rita Kohl from Brazil, and two authors, Camilla Grudova from Scotland, and Rebecca Brown from the US Pacific Coast. Each of them took advantage of their time here in Japan to meet with other writers and readers.
We put together this exhibit in the hope of showcasing some of the work of the Translation Project here at the WIHL. I hope it gives you a sense of the richness and joy that comes to us through the act of translation.
