Open Seminar “Charm of Chinese Poetry Listened to in Multiple Languages”
A public seminar will be held to appreciate the appeal of Chinese poetry, which has been “read and enjoyed” in Japan since ancient times, by comparing the different Chinese dialect readings.
This time, the Chinese poem “Dawn at Spring” written by Meng Haoran in high Tang dynasty will be recited in several Chinese languages (dialects) to appreciate the different tones and phonemes of each.
First, the poem will be recited in modern Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Taiwanese etc., in an attempt to reconstruct (estimate) the pronunciation of high Tang dynasty (i.e., pre-recorded sounds), and compare it with the Japanese Chinese pronunciation.
