Lecture
Nodoka ODAWARA
Sculptor, critic, and publisher. Nodoka Odawara was born in Miyagi Prefecture in 1985. She holds a PhD in Fine Arts from University of Tsukuba and is the author of Carving/Conquering Modernity (Kodansha, 2021). Her recent publications include Yoshimoto Takaaki: Continuing to Contemplate the Era of Upheaval 10 Years After His Death and Abe’s Assassination: Endings and Beginnings (both Kawade Shobo Shinsha, 2022). Her major exhibitions include the 2021 exhibit Carving/Conquering Modernity: In Aomori’s Snow Country at the Aomori Contemporary Art Center and (1946-1948 / 1923-1951) at AICHI TRIENNALE 2019.
Yasuaki KAKEI
Yasuaki Kakehi, PhD, is an artist and researcher of interactive media. He has worked at many universities, including Keio University and MIT. He joined The University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies as Professor in 2018. He researches and builds physical interfaces that pay particular attention to physical materials and physicality. His works have been exhibited at engineering conferences such as CHI and UIST, arts festivals such as Ars Electronica, and received awards such as the STARTS Prize Honorary Mention.
Hideo FURUKAWA
Author. Hideo Furukawa was born in Fukushima Prefecture in 1966. Since publishing his 1998 debut novel, 13, he has gone on to write fiction in a variety of formats, from flash fiction to giga-novels. He has also penned stage plays, criticism, and nonfiction. His public readings often feature collaborations that span disparate artistic fields and have inspired any number of original works. Furukawa does not simply write; he grapples with the limitless expanse of literary expression. His most recent work is also his first long-form poem, Ten-on. February 2023 will mark the 25th anniversary of his literary debut.

Masaki HUJIHATA
Artist. Masaki Fujihata has been a trailblazer in media arts since the 1980s. He is the recipient of numerous awards. In 1996, he was the first Japanese artist awarded a Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica. He has taught at Keio University since 1989 and Tokyo University of the Arts since 1998. In 2005, he helped establish Tokyo University of the Arts’ Graduate School of Film and New Media. In 2022, Fujihata opened BeHere / 1942 at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) in Los Angeles. BeHere / 1942 was realized in collaboration with JANM and the Yanai Initiative.
Maicheal EMMERICH
Michael Emmerich is Tadashi Yanai Professor of Japanese Literature at UCLA, and has a joint appointment as Professor of Japanese Literature at Waseda University.
