As usual in the fall, the Library offers you a new season’s greeting card. Hopefully you will enjoy using the card.
“Six-petal flower” from Children Playing
Utagawa, Hiroshige
This picture is from a book of color woodblock prints (nishiki-e) on the theme of children at play that contains 22 different pictures by Utagawa Hiroshige III (1842-1894) and other artists. “Six-petal flower” means snow, and the picture depicts children playing in the snow, much as they do now, enjoying snowball fights and making snowmen. Note how the form of the snowman is significantly different from modern snowmen: in this painting he is modeled on the meditating figure of Bodhidharma (Japanese Daruma), the founder of the Zen school of Buddhism.
