【Yanai Initiative】Symposium “Buddhism, Literature, Medicine: East Asian Knowledge Systems in Flux” (November 30)

Buddhism, Literature, Medicine: East Asian Knowledge Systems in Flux

This international symposium aims to explore how diverse fields such as literature, medicine, history, and Buddhism intersect and complement each other to form new understandings. It will examine the historical backgrounds of these disciplines and the impact they have on contemporary scholarship and society, elucidating how their interactions have facilitated academic development.
The symposium will focus on how the unique knowledge systems and cultural backgrounds of literature, medicine, history, and Buddhism influence one another, generating new insights and perspectives. Through specific case studies, we will discuss how these fields have interacted and resonated across academic boundaries.
Additionally, we will consider how intercultural exchanges have fostered advancements within each discipline and generated new cultural understandings. The symposium will also address the implications of these exchanges for modern society and explore future possibilities. By adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, we aim to highlight how literature, medicine, history and Buddhism have mutually reinforced each other, providing new knowledge and understanding, and offering insights into the future of the humanities and social sciences.
