In the 2026 edition of Japan’s “Truly Strong Universities” rankings (Weekly Toyo Keizai), Waseda University was ranked second overall among 544 national, public, and private universities nationwide for the third consecutive year.
According to this ranking, Waseda University is highly rated for its “international strength,” such as the number of partner institutions for study abroad and the proportion of international faculty members, as well as for its admission competitiveness (ratio of applicants to enrollment capacity).
The “Truly Strong Universities” ranking is a multifaceted evaluation of a university’s overall strength based on 13 objective indicators, including educational and research capabilities, employability, financial strength, and international strength. It is a ranking that aims to reveal the underlying strength of a university that cannot be measured by entrance exam deviation scores alone.
The top schools for 2026 are as follows:
1st place: University of Tokyo
2nd place: Waseda University
3rd place: Keio University
4th place: Kyoto University
5th place: Tohoku University

We will take this opportunity to return to the spirit of our founding and, based on the principle “Do not think only of your own interest, your family’s interest, or the interests of your country alone, but be ambitious to contribute to humankind throughout the world,” we will promote our 150th Anniversary Project, aiming to evolve into “a university that contributes to humankind throughout the world” by 2050.
