On March 9th, Momoka Muraoka (Graduate School of Sport Sciences), a former member of the Waseda University Ski Club, competed in the Para Alpine Skiing Women’s Super-G Sitting event at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics, winning a silver medal. This brings her total medal count from a Winter Paralympics to 10, tying her with Head of Team Japan Kuniko Obinata (a 2017 graduate of the Graduate School of Sport Sciences) for the most medals ever won by an athlete from Japan at the Winter Paralympics.

Muraoka, who missed the Women’s Downhill Sitting event on the 7th due to an injury she sustained in November when she broke her left collarbone, started third in this event and finished in second place with a stable time of 1 minute 24.14 seconds.
She has competed in four consecutive Paralympic Games since the Sochi Games in 2014. At the last Beijing Games, she won four medals, including three gold in Women’s Downhill Sitting, Giant Slolam Sitting, and Super-G Sitting.
Three events remain in which she could potentially compete, and we look forward to cheering her on!
A Comment by Muraoka
“Not only was I returning from injury, but it had been a year since my last race, and my first race at the Paralympics. I was really nervous about the difficult course. I’m happy that I was able to reach the finish line safely in my first race.” (Translated to English from an NHK interview)
A Congratulatory Message from Waseda University President Aiji Tanaka

I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to Momoka Muraoka, a student at our University’s Graduate School of Sport Sciences, who won a silver medal in the Para Alpine Skiing Women’s Super-G Sitting event at the Milan-Cortina Winter Paralympics.
This is Muraoka’s fourth consecutive Winter Paralympics, following her participation in the 2014 Sochi Winter Paralympics, the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Paralympics, and the 2022 Beijing Winter Paralympics, and her total medal count now stands at 10. This marks the most medals ever won by a Japanese athlete, tying her with alumna Kuniko Obinata (a 2017 graduate of the Graduate School of Sport Sciences), a former para alpine skier and Head of Team Japan.
Winning a medal despite sustaining an injury last November represents a remarkable achievement and marks the first medal for Japan at this year’s Games. Muraoka’s success has given great hope and courage not only to the Japanese team, but also to our students, alumni, faculty and staff. We sincerely hope to see her continued success during the Games.
