6th Waseda Brussels Conference: “Environmental Studies for Carbon Neutrality”

On November 28, 2024, Waseda University, in collaboration with the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), held the 6th Waseda Brussels Conference entitled “Environmental Studies for Carbon Neutrality” at the BrIAS Seminar Hall in Brussels, Belgium. Since the opening of the Waseda University Brussels Office (WBO) in April 2016, the Waseda Brussels Conference has been held every year except for the COVID-19 pandemic years.

The 6th Conference was organized by Professor Toshihide Arimura of the School of Political Science and Economics at Waseda University. During the opening ceremony, opening remarks were made by Waseda University Vice President Masahiko Gemma and ULB Vice President Anne Weyembergh. In addition, His Excellency Kazutoshi Aikawa, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Mission of Japan to the European Union gave a guest speech, followed by a video message from His Excellency Jean-Eric Paquet, Ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union to Japan.

The conference focused on topics such as carbon pricing, carbon border adjustment mechanisms (CBAM), and the green economy, with distinguished academics, international experts, government officials, and industry representatives from Japan and Europe presenting their respective perspectives. Discussions on specific challenges and solutions followed, leading to an active exchange of ideas and exploration of future collaboration among participants.

In conclusion, the importance of further strengthening the collaboration between academia, industry and government to continue efforts to achieve the carbon neutral goal was reaffirmed. The conference was successfully concluded.
