On December 22, female wrestler Yui Susaki (2nd year student at the School of Sport Sciences) emerged champion in the 50kg weight class at the Emperor’s Cup organized by the Japan Wrestling Federation. Her winning of the cup has qualified her to compete in the Tokyo Olympics Qualifying Tournament scheduled to take place in March 2020 in Xi’an, China.
Congratulations and well done, Yui!
Earlier this year, Yui failed to represent Japan in the World Wrestling Championships after being defeated by Yuki Irie in the play-off match held in July. The play-off outcome was a blow to Yui’s confidence and her chances of representing Japan in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics had become slim. However, after receiving tremendous encouragement from her coach and visiting the Waseda Sports Museum for the first time, which she said had let her feel deeply about the Waseda sports spirit, she became determined not give up on the slightest possible chance. Her resolution had paid off and she now stands a better chance in competing in the Tokyo Olympics.
