2017 marks the 45th anniversary of the normalization of Sino-Japanese (China and Japan) diplomatic relations. Aiming at deepening mutual understanding and friendship among youths from both countries, a total of 1000 students (500 Japanese and 500 Chinese students) from approximately 60 Japanese universities and 40 Chinese universities gathered at the Sino-Japanese Youth Exchange in Peking University. Representing all the Japanese universities, President Kaoru Kamata attended the commemorative event on September 1.

“2017 marks the 45th anniversary of the normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations. Next year in 2018, we will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Japan-China Peace and Friendship Treaty. I hope that all students present today will make use of this opportunity to deepen our understanding for each other while sharing the joy of learning together at the same time,” said President Kamata in his delivery speech at the Sino-Japanese Youth Exchange.

Liu Yandong, who is currently serving as the Vice Premier of the People’s Republic of China, was also present and had a meeting with President Kamata and other representatives from Japan.

Starting with the university exchange agreement signed with Peking University in 1982, Waseda University has signed many academic exchange agreements with other Chinese universities and research institutions. As of May 2017, a total number of 3,282 Chinese students (making up 60% of the international student population) are currently studying in Waseda University.

In addition, aside from signing the student exchange agreement, Waseda University has also signed a double degree program agreement with Peking University in 2005 to foster student development. As of 2017, more than 200 students from each university have participated in this program. Before the actual commencement of the Sino-Japanese Youth Exchange, President Kamata had also had the opportunity the meet and talk to Hao Ping (Chairman of Peking University School Committee) and Lin Jianhua (President of Peking University) to discuss and exchange views on how to further expand the collaboration between the two universities.

Waseda University will continue to work with Peking University and other higher educational institutions in China to strengthen the ties between Japan and China by expanding existing collaborative network and agreements.
