Realizing my dream of working overseas for a global firm

The joy of applying my knowledge in a real-world setting

During high school, I read an interview with Professor Kazue Shimamura (Faculty of Commerce) and grew interested in marketing and advertising. I entered Waseda in hopes of studying under the professor and as a student in her seminar on contemporary advertising research, presented my own sales strategy to companies and experienced the joys of applying my knowledge in real-world settings. In addition to my schoolwork, I gained fulfillment working together with my lacrosse club teammates towards a common goal. This process of working hard every day to make my goals come to fruition has become the basis of my life.

Going to the US to follow my dreams

After graduating, I joined a major internet service company where I participated in new service development and business planning, and accumulated experience in electronic commerce. My fifth year in the industry was a major turning point. I was working in Sendai when the Great East Japan Earthquake struck. Shortly after the disaster, I realized “now is the time to pursue my dreams.” I left my job and went to New York on my own in order to fulfill my dream of working overseas. In New York, I worked as an intern at a Japanese company, and although I had a fulfilling experience, I felt the limitations of doing everything on my own.

After ten years my wish was granted, moving me to Singapore

After returning to Japan, I began looking for jobs within internationally active firms. I eventually found a position in Fast Retailing. While involved in the promotion of online shopping that utilizes electronic applications and mail magazines, I found an opportunity to relocate to Singapore. After ten years and my wish granted, I was taking my first steps towards working abroad.

Experiences gained and bonds formed along the way are invaluable assets

Now that I work at a global firm, I have come to realize the importance of constantly pursuing one’s goals. For those who want to be active internationally, I encourage you to stay curious and lead a proactive student life. Even amidst setbacks, the experiences you gain and bonds you form while pursuing your dreams will become invaluable assets.
