Supporting students at Waseda and around the world

Administrative Director for International Student Services, Hiroyuki Yamaguchi
Every year, approximately 2,000 Waseda students study abroad at partnership universities in 40 countries and regions around the world. We ask students to tell us about their vision for the future and their goals for studying abroad. After numerous consultations, we pick a handful of schools from our 500 partner universities that best accommodate the student’s needs. There is a variety of programs available to students including one-year exchanges, double degree programs, half-year programs, and short-term programs, and we are constantly creating new programs. Recently we introduced short-term programs for new students in Malaysia Vietnam, and Taiwan that take advantage of the spring holiday in May. One of the strengths of Waseda’s study abroad programs is our partnerships with the world’s top schools in regions that are of interest to students.
In addition to students studying abroad, we also provide comprehensive support for international students at Waseda. We work together with other departments to respond to economic needs and provide a comfortable learning environment. In 2014, we invited Columbia University students and professors to Waseda as part of a special event. Japanese students that participated in the program were able to interact and study together with Columbia University students. In 2014, we established a four-week summer session program in which 118 students from eighteen countries and regions around the world came to Waseda to study Japanese language and culture. We intend to continue exploring new ways to provide the best opportunities to Waseda’s up-and-coming global leaders.
