Waseda athletes Natsumi Hoshi, Daiya Seto, and Kanako Watanabe took home three gold medals at the 2015 Fina World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia. On September 8, Waseda President Kamata invited the three athletes to Waseda Campus to celebrate their outstanding accomplishments.
Waseda Swim Club Manager Keisuke Okuno
“The three individuals standing here all won medals at this year’s world swimming championships. Although they won four medals for Japan, each medal is a testament to their own, personal hard work. I believe this tournament was a showcase for Waseda and its powerful athletes.”
Natsumi Hoshi (Women’s 200m butterfly gold medal winner, 2013 Waseda graduate)
“I won a bronze medal at the London Olympics 200m butterfly competition, but this time I was finally able to win the gold. I am proud to be from Waseda and am incredibly happy to be here together with two other Waseda athletes. I hope to report another victory at next year’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics!”
Daiya Seto (Men’s 400m individual medley gold medal winner, third year Waseda student)
“I am happy to be here with a gold medal after my second consecutive win in the 400m individual medley competition. My dream of participating in the Olympics has come true and I hope to come home with a gold medal next year.”
Kanako Watanabe (Women’s 200m individual breaststroke gold medal winner, 200m individual medley silver medal, first year student)
“My success at this year’s championships is thanks to these two being by my side. I hope to do my best at next year’s Olympics!”
Waseda University President Kamata
“Congratulations to Natsumi Hoshi, Daiya Seto, and Kanako Watanabe on your gold medal victories. This accomplishment on the world stage of swimming will go down in history for Waseda University. I would like to take this opportunity to express my congratulations to the three athletes and share these accomplishments with the world. I know you three will continue to improve and excel, so please remember your Waseda heritage as you compete on the world stage at next year’s Olympics!”
All three athletes are on Top Athlete Scholarships from Waseda University’s Alumni Association.
