On May 25, 2015, Waseda’s Research Institute for Science and Engineering and Kikuicho city’s neighborhood association hosted a Kannon memorial service at Waseda’s Kikuicho campus.

There used to be a bomb shelter at Kikuicho campus. During a firebombing raid on May 25, 1945, approximately 300 students and neighborhood residents taking refuge in the shelter passed away due to smoke inhalation.

Since 1948, Waseda’s Research Institute for Science and Engineering has hosted a Kannon memorial service every year on May 25 for those who lost their lives that day. This year, neighborhood residents, students, researchers, and others associated with the university participated in the service. Attendees offered their condolences and prayers for the victims after words from a speaker who experienced the tragedy that occurred that day.
