With its sign curtain hanging in front, Owariya gives off an atmosphere of apprenticeship and history. The restaurant has a “Teishoku (定食),” or meal set, geared towards students. My recommendation is the meat-tofu meal set (肉豆腐定食) which has meat, tofu, cabbage, onion, bean sprouts, and carrots expertly cooked together with soy sauce flavoring. The gentle flavor and nutritious vegetables provide a warm sensation similar to that of a family meal. The set is of considerable volume and includes servings of rice, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. Of the staff, several are Waseda students and the menu is written by the Waseda calligraphy club. The owner busily manages the restaurant while happily chatting away with students.
