Waseda University has 44 sports teams with approximately 2,500 members. Waseda has been actively involved in athletics since its predecessor Tokyo College was founded in 1882. Founder of Waseda University, Okuma Shigenobu, was active in sports and shortly after the university’s founding, began hosting an annual sports event where faculty and students participate together. Tokyo College’s athletics department was established in 1897, and in 1902, after Tokyo College became Waseda University, six official sports teams were recognized including those for the Japanese martial arts form jujitsu, kendo (Japanese fencing), Japanese archery, baseball, and tennis. Waseda now has 44 official sports teams ranging from those in baseball to the modern Japanese martial art Shorinji Kempo. Waseda participates in seasonal events such as the regatta competition with Keio University known as “Waseda-Keio Regatta,” the Tokyo Big6 Baseball League held at Meiji Jingu Stadium, a new year’s relay race held in Hakone, and a Rugby competition between Waseda and Meiji University. All members of Waseda’s sports teams attend the Waseda Athlete Program (WAP) where they receive necessary guidance to achieve a high level of athleticism and academic ability.
