Waseda University has long placed great importance on diversity among its students and faculty. We will continue to uphold this policy, welcoming students from overseas and encouraging many of our current students to study abroad.
Waseda University offers English-based degree programs across six undergraduate schools and 15 graduate schools. This enables students who have not learned Japanese to study and earn bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
For students who do not fully understand Japanese, we have taken measures such as hiring new staff and counselors who can communicate in English to support them in various aspects of student life, such as providing consultation regarding course registration in each office of our undergraduate and graduate schools, medical appointments at the Health Support Center, and psychological counseling. Additionally, we have provided Japanese language education through our Center for Japanese Language to support international students in participating confidently in daily social life and feeling more at home here. In this way, in creating an environment where vital support services can be provided to students who, regardless of nationality, have not learned Japanese, the university has incurred significant expenditures. Therefore, we are currently considering asking students who have not learned Japanese to pay a certain amount of fees going forward.
However, when revising any fees paid by students—not limited to tuition—our university has always carefully deliberated and provided advance notice. This policy remains unchanged. It has not yet been decided what changes, if any, will be made to the fees for students coming to study at our university from overseas or when any such changes would be implemented. In any case, potential changes will not apply to any of our current students.
This announcement has been issued in order to clarify the university’s way of thinking regarding this matter.
