How did you find out about Waseda University?

I had been searching for the best universities and institutions which could offer scope for learning and innovative research in wireless telecommunications. Whereas I found Waseda University as a leading institution with the most experienced faculty, I also believed that they could enhance my research and learning scope in wireless telecommunications.

Regarding the program, I found the particulars on the internet. Based on that, I approached the International Admissions Office to get further details regarding the program and admission. The admission office gave instructions about the application and helped me choose a supervisor by searching faculty profiles on the university’s database. Fortunately, I found a professor who is closely related to my area of interest and I approached him and shared my research topic.

Why did you choose Waseda University?

2-200x150Primarily I understood that Waseda is immensely encouraging the research and it is a prestigious university not only in Japan but also in the world. I went through the university e-brochures and catalogues then came to know many eminent personalities have gotten their education from Waseda. Lee Byung-chul, the founder of Samsung, is one among many. Further, I also noticed that the very famous scientist Albert Einstein visited to deliver a lecture in the year 1922 and Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, was the first recipient of an honorary doctorate from Waseda. In addition, Waseda has extraordinary collaborations with other global academic institutions around the world, which is very helpful to produce innovative outcomes in research. Based on this high profile, I believed that I can have better opportunity to do research in my interest area.

Did you have any concerns before coming to Japan?

I knew that Japan is one of the richest countries in technology and security, but I had concern about learning Japanese language for daily life. Although I did not get enough time to learn Japanese before enrolling, because Waseda offers regular and online Japanese language courses and I am doing my best to learn the language.

Did you have any difficulties getting started here?

1-200x150Yes, I do face several challenges in communicating with shopkeepers and salespersons in shops and supermarkets. I also get confused in catching trains with different routes due to language and it is also a challenging task to get information. However, I try to get information by using translator on my mobile.

How is your life in Japan and at Waseda now?

Though I felt uncomfortable in the beginning with different language, culture, etc, I am adjusted well with the environment in every aspect. The orientation and introductory events in both the dormitory and the university helped me in making many friends from different nations, such as Kenya, China, Taiwan and Korea. In fact, I am overwhelmed with administrative and health center people for proving greater hospitality, kindness, care and guidance when I was sick immediate after enrollment. I found Japanese are very kind and polite towards communicating with other people and it causes no difficulty to me, especially the dorm supervisor and resident assistants help immensely if I have any difficulty. At present, I am very happy and comfortable in Japan.

What do you do in your free time?

3-200x150Indeed, I did not get much time during the first semester to adapt to the new educational environment and engaging with regular class and coursework. Rarely, I do watch movies but mostly I spend time on reading subjects related to my research. Since I am a food lover, I also visit good Japanese and Chinese restaurants with the support of friends who know the language well.

How are the relationships with your supervisor and lab members?

6-200x150My supervisor is very close to all lab members, and immensely helpful with suggestions about research work. He also shares information regarding conferences with all of us. In my lab we have a guest professor and assistant professors, who all are used to helping us at any time if we require any information. And all lab members are very friendly and helpful to each other.

What is your research about?

My research area is Centralized Self Organizing Networks (CSON). It mainly focuses on the legacy of existing and Next-Generation Networks (NGN) to configure, optimize and manage them automatically by plug-and-play with the radio accessing mobile networks. In addition, I will introduce some new optimization techniques on radio network architecture for 5G.

What are your plans after you finish your degree?

I have great passion towards research, because I believe that innovation can allow future generations to lead their lives in a more advanced environment. So I would like to continue research, but that depends on achieving a high level of scholarship. I will find a job to attain better economic conditions and work experience, and then I will find the best opportunities to pursue a PhD.

Do you have any advice for prospective students?

In English

To be honest, being in Japan is a delightful opportunity for learning. Firstly, there is vast developed infrastructure, commuting systems and technology which support everything in daily life. It has been an astonishing experience to me so far. Secondly, Japanese universities particularly Waseda, assist to enrich research with passion and commitment. I believe Waseda University is the right place to enhance, explore and implement your inventive thoughts for those who have great vision for innovation.
