What men and women can do to promote gender equality – Japan’s promise to the international community

On May 28, Waseda hosted a lecture from United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women Chairman Yoko Hayashi at Ono Auditorium. The auditorium was at full capacity with approximately 230 students, faculty, and guests who gathered to hear from the former Waseda Law School graduate.

Centered around the 30th anniversary of Japan’s ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, Hayashi discussed issues regarding gender equality while highlighting turning points such as Waseda graduate Keiko Watanabe becoming Japan’s first female lawyer.
“The foremost line for gender equality in Japan is that of lawyers. However, in regards to gender issues, men must also participate,” commented Hayashi while discussing the importance of addressing gender issues from both a male and female perspective.
Hayashi told students, “An undergraduate education is not enough when it comes to actualizing a world based on equality. Therefore, I encourage students to consider pursuing law school.”
