Congratulations to all new students on your entry to Waseda University.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest condolences and sympathy to all the victims and sufferers of the devastating Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11.

The unprecedented calamity that befell this nation made us truly realize the magnitude of mother nature, and the preciousness of human lives and human bonds that connect us all. A series of incidents that followed the earthquake unfolded the reality that an affluent and comfortable living enjoyed in contemporary society is dependent upon such an extremely vulnerable infrastructure that we could lose it very easily. The disaster not only severely crippled the economic and social life of this nation, but also evoked mounting apprehension over the potentially catastrophic influence upon worldwide issues such as countering global warming.

We however cannot remain saddened in despair. The spirit in which Waseda University was founded is threefold: to benefit the global world of academia through liberal and innovative research; “Independence of Learning”, to contribute to the social development by implementing principles while striving to master theories; “Practical Utilization of Knowledge”, and to nurture individuals that respect individuality and extend helping hand to and flourish in global society; “Developing Good Citizenship”. It was firmly believed to have been these pillars of our philosophy that would pave the way to a new era.

I strongly expect that all of you will embrace the philosophy of Waseda University, conduct thorough examination of our stance in relation to the nature and the roles of science and technology as well as of social systems, and grow, with an “Enterprising Spirit” within you, to be a driving force for the bright future of global community. Competence that you will need to achieve this goal must be fully cultivated by making the most out of the superior research and educational environment that Waseda is proud to offer. We will provide our utmost to ensure that your study, research, and extracurricular activities will bring results.

To its dismay, Waseda University decided to cancel the AY2011 Entrance Ceremonies and change class period for the First (Spring) Semester. The decision was made in light of the circumstances under which we continue to undergo aftershocks, in addition to social responsibilities expected of Waseda University to reduce strain on electric energy consumption and the public transportation system. I would like to close my address by asking you to show understanding on the inevitable decision that we made while you thoroughly prepare yourselves for the beginning of the Semester.
