Opening Remarks
AKAO Ken-Ichi (Director of WIAS/Professor, Faculty of Social Sciences, Waseda University)
Ken-Ichi Akao joined the Faculty of Social Sciences, Waseda University, in April 1995 after holding JSPS research fellow and assistant professor positions at Kyoto University. He has been a professor since April 2002 and the director of WIAS since September 2022. He teaches environmental economics and global environmental issues. He obtained his bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees from Kyoto University with a major in forest management. He is an environmental economist. His research interest is in economic theory focusing on sustainable development, intergenerational equity, and the tragedy of the commons. He was the editor-in-chief of Environmental Economics and Policy Studies (2014-18) and the President of the Society for Environmental Economics and Policy Studies (2016-18). He is the secretary general of the Asian Association of Environmental Economics (2021-).

MIYAJIMA Hideaki (Executive Vice President (Financial Affairs), Waseda University/Adviser, WIAS)
Graduated from the Rikkyo University School of Economics. Completed the master’s program at the Rikkyo University Graduate School of Economics. Completed the 2nd doctorate program at the Tokyo University Graduate School of Economics. Completed the doctorate program at the Waseda University School of Commerce. Served as a Research Associate at the Tokyo University Institute of Social Science and then as an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at the Waseda University School of Commerce before becoming a professor. Served in various research positions at the Harvard University Reischauer Institute. Served as Faculty Fellow at the Research Institute of Economy, Trade, and Industry IAA (RIETI). Assumed the concurrent position of Adviser at the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study. His many works include The Ownership of Japanese Corporations in the 20th Century, Review of Financial Studies, 2014, Benchmarking Business Unit Governance in Turbulent Times: The Case of Japanese Firms, Benchmarking: An International Journal, 2012.
