To date, the Institute has signed memoranda of understanding (MOU) agreements with two counterparts to provide a basis for international exchange of researchers and joint research projects, thereby contributing to the advancement of research by both the Institute and Waseda University as a whole.
The University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (UBIAS), new organization established at the initiative of the Freiburg Institute of Advanced Studies (Germany), has created a new network of research institutes that will promote cross-border affiliations and personnel exchanges. Through our activities as a member of this group, in addition to promoting international cooperation, we will seek to enhance both the attractiveness to researchers offered by our Institute and the international stature earned by our researchers.
UBIAS stands for “University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study”. Unlike traditional Institutes for Advanced Study, UBIAS are associated with or embedded within a university, and actively contribute to the academic culture and the scientific achievements of their home university. By offering various fellowship programmes on different academic levels (junior and senior researchers), UBIAS institutes bring together outstanding researchers from different disciplines, nationalities and academic backgrounds, creating a productive environment for innovative research. These common characteristics have proved to be a fruitful basis for mutual exchange, although the individual institutes display a large variety of different concepts and academic pursuits. With their individual profiles, they answer to the specific needs and strengths of their affiliate university. While many institutes have traditionally concentrated on humanities and social sciences, an increasing number of institutes now incorporate theoretical and experimental sciences.(UBIAS HP)
The Waseda Institute for Advanced Study is committed to promoting the university-wide acceptance of leading researchers from other countries as well as to facilitating the production of research results, scholarly exchange with researchers at Waseda, and other such outcomes. For this purpose, the Institute invites as Visiting Fellows recognized researchers who are doing work at the cutting edge of their fields. These Fellows will be provided an excellent environment for conducting their research and will also be expected to contribute to the research activity of Waseda University.
