Event Report is available >> [Event Report] WIAS 15th Anniversary Symposium “Well-being in the time of uncertainty”

Overview

This symposium aims to focus on various issues such as climate change, energy issues, natural disasters, and food problems in an age of uncertainty, and discuss the roles of institutions of higher education.
Through the sessions, WIAS would like to examine “well-being” in uncertain times, utilizing the institute’s interdisciplinary and international features and interests.
Our world today is facing highly difficult and debatable issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic and war in Ukraine. The two-day symposium consisting of keynote speeches and roundtables has the subthemes: “energy and sustainability” for Day 1 and “life” for Day 2. The roundtables will focus on familiar topics: “energy issues,” “sustainable society,” “culture/arts,” “health and security,” and “inclusive society.” Researchers in natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities will exchange their knowledge beyond the boundaries of academic disciplines.
To commemorate the 15th anniversary of WIAS, keynote speeches will be given by the directors of Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstanz, and Institute for Advanced Research, Nagoya University on the topic of university-based institutes for advanced study. Professor Toshi H. Arimura, former director of WIAS, will be giving a speech on the economics of a carbon neutral society.
