To all of you leaving Waseda Forest, words from each Senior Dean and school principal [2023 Graduation Commemoration Issue]

To everyone who will graduate from Waseda University in March 2024, we will send messages from each Senior Dean and school principal. Keep these words in your heart and walk towards your dreams.

Start with half of the whole

Faculty of Political Science and Economics
Junichi Saito

“The beginning is half of the whole.” This is an ancient Greek proverb cited by Plato and Aristotle. If you want to accomplish something, you have to start. However, as this adage implies, reaching "half of the whole" is not in itself so acceptable.Easy)It's not a bad thing. He solicits help from others and draws their help; conversely, he lends his strength unsparingly to those who are trying to start something. Building such mutual relationships seems to be the key. This society is at a dead end in many ways. I look forward to your new beginnings.

Next One!

Faculty of Law
Tatsuhisa Tamura

Regardless of who said it (the painter Picasso or the comedian Chaplin), it is said that the answer to the question "What is your greatest masterpiece" was "Next One!". It is a word that expresses the feeling of not being satisfied with the current situation and aiming for even greater heights. Japan's economic society, which you are about to jump into, loudly demands innovation. In order to succeed, isn't it important to have a mindset of actively incorporating new things, that is, Enterprising Spirit? Cultivate this spiritnourishmentI would like to send these words to all of you who have participated in this event, wishing them all the best in their endeavors.

That waste has become a lubricant for the world.

Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences
Hisao Takamatsu

Keiji Sada's lines in the movie "Good morning" directed by Yasujiro Ozu. I was amused by the story of a junior high school student who was scolded by his father for saying "too many unnecessary things for a child!" and then retorted that the adults' "Konnichiha" and "Ohayo" were all unnecessary. Then, say this line. There are many things you learn at university that will serve as a good lubricant in unexpected situations someday. Have fun using it and make the most of it. In response to this line, Sadako Sawamura, who plays Sada's older sister, responds, ``Even so, it's hard for me to say important things.'' This too is like a proverb.

Time is the most unique and scarce resource (Peter Drucker)

Faculty of Education and Integrated Arts and Sciences
Kenji Hashimoto

These are the words of business scientist Peter Drucker. There is no doubt that time is a precious commodity, and every inch of light and shade should not be underestimated. However, if you are too focused on time performance, you tend to overlook the important things. Time is for humans; humans do not exist for time. Detours and stopovers are often the gateway to rich experiences. Once in a while, why not take a train at each station, watch the scenery pass by more slowly than usual, and listen to the rustling sounds inside the train? There must be some kind of rich discovery there.

The best people never stop going (Zhuangzi)

Faculty of Commerce
Masanori Yokoyama

These words are from Zhuangzi and are understood to explain the need for progress through ingenuity. Amidst the paradigm shift that continues from the pandemic, the new society in which you will face will be forced to change, and you will be required to act without being bound by preconceptions. From now on, it will probably be a repetition of trial and error, and in some cases, a repetition of error and error. Take advantage of the intellectual inquisitive spirit you cultivated during your student life and challenge your own possibilities while enjoying the unknown world. I wish you all the best in your endeavors.

I have never failed (Thomas Edison)

Faculty of Science and Engineering
Shigeki Sugano

Thomas Edison created many inventions including the light bulb. This quote is widely known as a symbol of his philosophy as an engineer. The original text is "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." The important thing is to see everything positively and to make an effort. My motto is to always look ahead and move forward. I hope that you will take on challenges positively in order to create new science and technology and a new society.

Education is not preparation for life, but life itself (Dewey)

Faculty of Social Sciences
Osamu Soda

These are the words of an American philosopher and educator. Change is accelerating in these turbulent times. Learning is lifelong. After graduating from university, opportunities to study will become more and more distant unless you create them yourself. If relearning is fun, life will be fun, and if learning is rich, life will be rich. Waseda University is a community platform for lifelong learning. Please cherish your friends who have known you well since your school days and who will continue to encourage and help you grow. Develop even greater connections through learning. See you at Waseda!

Connecting people and knowledge

Faculty of Human Sciences
Hiroyuki Mishima

Human science is to contribute to society with a multifaceted and comprehensive understanding of reality by bridging the divide between disciplines using multidisciplinary methods, while maintaining a deep respect for humanity, which is often regarded as a neglected part of society's accelerating development. School of Human Sciences The encounters between people and the fusion of knowledge and knowledge at the Graduate School will be the foundation for discovering the values of a new age, which could not be found by simply acquiring individual knowledge. I hope that your encounters and studies at Waseda will bear fruit for your own happiness and the happiness of the world around you.

You will never grow unless you challenge yourself to do more than you can (Ralph Emerson)

Faculty of Sport Sciences
Hirotaka Matsuoka

“Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow (Emerson).”

Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere. (Carl Sagan)

Faculty of International Research and Education
Satoshi Inaba

These are the words of Carl Sagan. Currently, the world is in a situation where it is difficult to predict the future even for a moment due to Russia's military invasion of Ukraine and conflicts between Israeli and Palestinian armed groups. Utilize what you learned at Waseda University to understand the values of diverse countries, and as a human being living on this earth beyond your own choices and preferences, think of what you think is good for society. Please go ahead and put it into practice. I look forward to your success as a leader who meets and has great discussions with a variety of people, believes in the potential of yourself and your colleagues, and contributes to the world.

"There's still half left."

Art and Architecture School principal
Nobuaki Furuya

A notice issued by Takamasa Yoshizaka as head of School of Science and Engineering in July 1969 during a university dispute. It depicts a man holding a glass half full of wine and smiling, saying, "There's still half left," and another man sadly saying, "There's only half left. Yoshizaka wants to follow the theory of the smiling man. Yoshisaka says that he would like to follow the smiling man's theory, which shows that the same situation can be viewed positively or negatively, depending on how you look at it. When you wake up in the middle of the night and the futon falls off the bed, do you re-cover the futon or do you crawl under it?
