The “Waseda Family” Gathers in Seattle
On Sunday, October 19, WASEDA USA hosted “Waseda Friends Reception 2025 – Seattle.” The event welcomed not only Waseda Friends (former exchange students from the U.S. who studied abroad at Waseda University), but also Waseda alumni residing in the Seattle area and current Waseda students studying abroad at the University of Washington.
As all three pillars of the Waseda community were in attendance at the reception, Waseda USA representative, Anthony Johnson, who also organized and hosted the event, was inspired to remark, “A more apt name for this occasion would be The Waseda Family Reunion in Seattle!”

Nostalgic Moments and Good Food
Daichi Yamaguchi, Chair of the Waseda Alumni Association Seattle chapter (Seattle Tomonkai), played a key role in the event’s success, which was held in a private space at Feast Buffet, a popular Asian-fusion restaurant just outside central Seattle. Alongside Yamaguchi, speakers included former Chair, Yohji Kameoka, and Waseda Friends Rahul Misal and Anthony Johnson.
Following the speeches, guests enjoyed a slide presentation of Waseda’s history along with a video showcasing footage of the university campus as it appears today. The dining and conversation segment of the event was accompanied by a slide presentation titled Waseda Friends at a Glance, featuring photos of Friends during their study abroad days, allowing for guests to reminisce and share nostalgic moments.

Games, Gifts, and Goodbyes
The event continued with a quiz game, testing attendees’ knowledge with increasingly difficult questions on Waseda and Japanese culture and history. Winners had their pick from among unique Waseda-themed prizes.
As the evening drew to a close, guests gathered for a group photo and parting remarks. Goodie bags were distributed as tokens of appreciation, leaving everyone with a smile and a gift to take home.
As this reception demonstrated, the Waseda community in Seattle has a lot to be proud of. We at WASEDA USA hope this event marks the beginning of strong ties between Waseda Friends, Tomonkai members and students in the area that will only grow stronger for years to come.
