My Waseda Experience
2002 – 2004 Japanese Language Student

I will be forever indebted to Waseda for the language and knowledge this prestigious university has provided me. It was not only a wonderful experience but has opened doors professionally and perhaps more importantly, contributed greatly to my personal life.
I took a circuitous route to the Waseda classroom. I’ve always been fascinated by languages and studied Spanish and French overseas as a student at The Ohio State University. It was through these experiences that I caught the international bug and was lucky enough to secure my first job with an English teaching position at Nova in Saitama. I thought I’d be able to learn Japanese on my own but as anyone reading this knows, that is impossible. So, I applied to the Waseda language program and am forever grateful to have been accepted for two years.
It was due to this new language ability, cultural understanding, and what I suspect is a healthy dose of prestigious Waseda University name recognition, that I landed (pun intended) an Account Executive role at Japan Airlines in San Francisco back in 2006. I remain in the airline industry and it is thanks to Waseda that my career really took off (sorry for another bad pun). On a personal level, Waseda again is to thank for an excellent family life as my wife is Japanese, my kids are bilingual, and a large portion of our social lives are Japanese related. My kids attend Hoshuko – Japanese language school – here in San Francisco and our main activity is martial arts at World Oyama Karate, a traditional Japanese style dojo where my oldest son and I are black belts, and my younger son a green belt.
Being tied to Japan through marriage, our family returns every summer and I always take the time to walk the beautiful Waseda campus, reminiscing about the experience and how it affected my life. It is a little distressing to think twenty years have gone by and how the students there seem younger and younger to my middle-aged eyes. There is nothing I’d like better than to sit in the classroom again and improve my language ability, especially since my kids will soon surpass me, then make fun of my grammar mistakes.
The life I lead would not be as successful nor as fulfilling without those two years at Waseda and I am very proud to call myself a former student of such an excellent institution.
名門早稲田大学が私に与えてくれた語学と知識には、一生恩義を感じるでしょう。それは素晴らしかった経験だけではなく、プロフェッショナルな仕事への扉を開いてくれました。そしておそらくもっと重要なことは、私の人生そのものに大きく貢献したことでしょう。
私が早稲田への学びに向かったのは、直行ではなく遠回りの道でした。もともと語学が好きで、オハイオ州立大学に在籍していた時に、留学でスペイン語とフランス語を学びました。このような経験から初めて「国際」というものにとりつかれ、幸運にも埼玉県のノバで英語教師として働くことになったのです。独学で日本語を学べると思っていましたが、これを読んでいる皆さんはご存知のように、それは不可能です。そこで私は早稲田の語学プログラムに応募し、2年間受け入れてもらえました。そのことには、一生感謝しています。
この新しい語学力、文化的理解、そして名門早稲田大学の知名度によるものでしょう、2006年、私はサンフランシスコの日本航空でアカウント・エグゼクティブの職をに就くことができました。私は航空業界に今もいますが、私のキャリアが本当に飛躍した（悪いダジャレですみません）のは早稲田のおかげです。また個人的なことでも、妻は日本人だし、子供たちはバイリンガルで、そして私たちの社会生活の大部分は日本に関係していて、私の素晴らしい家庭生活は早稲田のお陰です。子供たちはこちらサンフランシスコの補習校に通っており、私たちはまた、国際大山空手道連盟の日本の伝統的なスタイルの道場で、武道を嗜んでいます。長男と私は黒帯、次男は緑帯です。
結婚を機に日本との縁が深まった私たち一家は、毎年夏になると日本に戻ります。そうした時に、私はいつも時間を取って美しい早稲田キャンパスを歩きながら、その経験自体やそれが私の人生にどのような影響を与えたかを思い出します。あれから20年という月日が流れたと思うと、中年の私の目には、そこにいる学生たちがどんどん若返っているように見えて、少し胸が痛みます。再び教室で座って、言語能力を向上させること以上に望むことはありません。なぜなら、子供たちはもうすぐ私を追い越して、私の文法の間違いをからかうようになるからです。
早稲田でのこのような2年間がなければ、私の人生はこれほど成功したものでも、充実したものでもなかったでしょう。このような素晴らしい教育機関の元学生であることを、とても誇りに思っています。
