Research on diesel engine catalysts and the reduction of white smoke in exhaust(更新予定)

Director

Masami MATSUBARA

As a central university in the research projects of the Research Association of Automotive Internal Combustion Engines (AICE), the Research Institute on Automotive Model Based Control carries out research and development on high functionality diesel particulate filters, explaining the mechanism of white smoke generation, and the control thereof.(更新予定)

Research themes

Research on diesel engine catalysts and the reduction of white smoke in exhaust(更新予定)

The following four projects are ongoing, with a focus on research on automobile catalysts.

1.

At the request of seven automakers, this project aims to complete the pilot project consigned to us by the Research Institute for Science and Engineering, after intensifying research in FY2012 and FY2013, through experimental testing and modeling of the numerical codes for the reactive thermal fluid inside diesel particulate filters (DPF), which are a catalyst for removing particulate included in diesel engines.

2.

This project, consigned to us by the Research Institute for Science and Engineering at the request of seven automakers, is being intensified in the aim of explaining the phenomenon of white smoke emitted from diesel engines and establishing a method to control it.

3.

This project aims to develop a numerical thermal fluid model of the reactivity of DOC through modeling and experimentation. We are considering expanding this to a major research project in FY2015.

4.

This project aims to develop a reactive numerical thermal fluid model of an SCR filter catalyst supported by a diesel particulate filter with DeNOx catalyst through modeling and experimentation. The research particularly focuses in detail on the effect of accumulated soot on the DeNOx purification characteristics in ammonia SCR, and the effects of the physical properties of individual filters on NOx purification characteristics.
