Do you know the Japanese traditional card game Karuta?
You may have heard about karuta from the anime movie “Chihayafuru”. Some may have memorized “Hyakunin Isshu” in school.
What’s your impression of karuta? You might think that it is played on special occasions such as New Year’s Day, but something you don’t usually see in daily life. And international students might not have many chances to learn and play it.
ICC will hold Karuta Night with the cooperation of Japan Life and Language Support Organization (LJ). In this event, you can play “Nihon Karuta” made by LJ and even make your own karuta!
“Nihon Karuta” is the karuta for everyone! Even if you don’t know kanji, Hyakunin Isshu, or the rules of karuta, it doesn’t matter! Just knowing hiragana is enough.
You can also take home the karuta you made during the event as a keepsake!
