When you think of West African music, you probably think of the rhythm of drums and people dancing under the sun. However, maybe not many people in Japan know about the culture and meanings behind the music.
In West Africa, music is closely connected with everyday life and culture, such as weddings and rituals.
Its meanings are diverse, including the transmission of myths and spells. Drums are especially important, being used for long-distance communication and storytelling.
ICC has invited Mr. Takumi Katou who sells, repairs and performs on West African musical instruments.
It is a special opportunity to experience the fascinating West African music culture and to play the djembe folk drum and other traditional instruments.
Music transcends culture and language.
Come and get to know the West African culture and different Waseda students by playing together!
