The Intercultural Communication Center (ICC) provides a valuable platform to explore new experiences and learn about diverse cultures. More importantly, it fosters connections among students from different backgrounds while introducing participants to activities they may never have tried before.

The ICC’s “Bosai Field Trip” was an enriching experience that highlighted the importance of disaster preparedness. Through this event, we learned practical skills such as assembling an emergency kit, deciding what to include in it, understanding safe evacuation protocols, and mentally preparing for potential crises.

Since moving to Japan, I have experienced several earthquakes, including a significant one in August 2024 during the height of the megaquake alert. These experiences reinforced the necessity of being prepared, as disasters often strike without warning.

The field trip began with an introduction to the activities and expectations for the day. We were divided into small groups of four, each equipped with a tablet that guided us through the tasks and allowed us to input our answers. The first activity involved an elevator simulation, where we discovered the proper response during an earthquake. Contrary to our initial assumptions, the correct action is to press all the buttons to ensure the elevator stops at the nearest floor, rather than remaining still.

Next, we entered a realistic post-disaster simulation room, which felt like an amusement park attraction due to its detailed setup. However, the scene’s accuracy was unsettling, as it mirrored the chaos that follows real disasters. Our group then moved to a park simulation, where we answered questions displayed on a screen while navigating through various obstacles. Although we missed one answer due to panic, the experience was both engaging and educational.

Another segment of the tour featured a room demonstrating different earthquake intensities, from mild tremors to severe shaking. Experiencing levels 5 to 7 was particularly alarming, as objects visibly fell, and it became increasingly difficult to stand. These simulations highlight the critical importance of understanding and preparing for such scenarios.

The final part of the event included a screening of Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, set in Odaiba. This animated film followed two siblings navigating the aftermath of a major earthquake and emphasized the crucial role of the first 72 hours in disaster survival. The film’s emotional impact resonated deeply with us, particularly when we realized the younger sibling did not survive—a poignant reminder of the harsh realities of disasters and the necessity of being ready for any eventuality.

Thank you very much, ICC, for this remarkable experience. I strongly recommend ICC events to other students. They not only offer practical and educational opportunities but also create lasting memories and friendships. These activities are an excellent way to connect with peers from around the world, while gaining skills and knowledge that extend beyond the classroom.
