Friendship Through Language and Culture ICC Language & Culture Exchange (Spring 2023) Participant Report

Simon
Graduate School of Business and Finance

I signed up for the ICC Language & Culture Exchange program because I wanted an opportunity to practice conversational Japanese in a casual setting. Since I learned most of my Japanese through formal language classes, I thought this program would be a great opportunity to apply my knowledge.  Also, this would be a good chance for me to teach English to the enthusiastic Japanese students at Waseda University. Once matched with a language partner, I created a Google Doc with a calendar to facilitate language exchange sessions with my partner.

My language exchange partner is an undergraduate student in the School of Political Science and Economics. My partner wants to improve her speaking skills because she wants to study abroad in Canada in the near future. During our language exchange sessions, I gave her insights into Canadian culture, sightseeing locations, food, geography, etc. I also recommended which Canadian universities would offer her the best experience.

I truly enjoyed our language exchange sessions. The activities included playing card games, watching Japanese comedy, conversing on various topics, helping each other with Japanese/English language questions, etc. I have made a great friend by participating in this program, and we would like to continue the language exchange beyond this semester.
