Japan is a land of many dialects, with each region’s original grammar and sound symbolizing the rich local culture. Touhoku-ben, Kansai-ben and Hakata-ben make up just a few of them.
It can be difficult to experience these dialects in Tokyo where standard Japanese is the dominant form of communication. This is why ICC is hosting a special themed cafe featuring one of Japan’s most spoken dialects: Kansai-ben!
Depending on the part of the Kinki-region, different types and original expressions of Kansai-ben are used.
This time we have the privilege to welcome the Kyoto Student Alumni Association and learn more about the culture of their city. You’ll have plenty of time for free talk as well.
This is your chance to learn, speak and experience Kansai-ben first-hand! If you are a visiting international student, this will be your great chance to know a type of Japanese not taught in class, so what are you waiting for?

Cooperation: Kyoto Student Alumni Association
The Kyoto Student Association is a circle of Waseda students, who are originally from Kyoto prefecture.
First and foremost, the circle’s role is to facilitate student exchange between our members. Our members’ reasons for joining are diverse; longing for Kyoto culture or simply missing the Kansai dialect, to name just a few.
Our main objective however, is simply to form personal connections and friendships through what we have in common. Furthermore we aim to keep a strong connection to our alumni and act as a social network for current and former students.
The Kyoto Student Association also belongs to the national Waseda student federation and participates in other student exchange events hosted by Waseda which connect our members with students all over the country. Last year our circle gave a presentation about Kyoto in Kyoto for the University President.
If you’re looking for a secondary circle, please feel free to join us.
