Although it is the ninth largest country in the world, most people in Japan are still relatively unfamiliar with the fascinating nation of Kazakhstan.
With a land mass larger than all of Western Europe but only 17 million inhabitants, it’s population density is among the lowest on earth.
Kazakhstan is one of only two landlocked countries in the world that lies on two continents: Europe and Asia, and with over 130 ethnicities it is truly a complex mosaic of cultures and languages.

With Russia to the north, China to the east and the great Caspian Sea to the west, the terrain ranges from snow-capped mountains, to expansive flatlands and even deserts.
Kazakhstan has historically been inhabited by nomadic tribes but was also part of the Soviet Union until independence in December 1991.
Islam is the religion of about 70% of the population and the Kazakh language itself is actually related to Turkish.

For this event several students from Kazakhstan will showcase their country and culture through dance, song, music and even poetry. There’ll also be a talk from one of Waseda’s own professors and during the cafe time you’ll have the chance to try some Kazakh treats!
