Konichiwa ^^, my name is Gleb and I was a supporter of the English Chat Club in June 2022.
I am an exchange student here at Waseda from Munich, Germany. I came to Japan because I wanted to experience a world very different from the one back home. So far, I am very impressed and love the life here in Tokyo. So much cuteness, beauty, and passion wherever I go. As a supporter of the English Chat Club, I could give back some of the kindness I have received living here by helping students with their English. Then I could also talk to Japanese locals and learn about their lives and aspirations. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it was on Zoom.
As a supporter, I facilitated conversations in a group of about seven students. It was fun. We would either play games (Have You Ever, Gartic Phone, Hangman) or have free conversations and discussions. Gartic Phone was super enjoyable as we often laughed about the silly images produced within the game. The free conversation was my favorite, as the participants were open to the conversation much more if they could choose the topic. The participants were very kind and gentle. Sometimes they also recommended their favorite places or restaurants in Japan and Tokyo \^-^/. I hope to cross paths with them again someday.
To any future supporter reading this, I give the following advice:
The participants can be a little shy sometimes, especially being held online, as the mute function creates a barrier for speaking. Instead of evenly assigning who talks next, it makes the flow and atmosphere better if the ones who talk decide who talks next.
I can recommend being an ECC-supporter and wish all you future supporters and participants good fun ^^”.
Sayonara.
