History of The GS Center

In March 2015, a student group Diversity Waseda proposed the creation of the “first LGBT Student Center in Japan” at the Waseda Vision 150 Student Competition and won the President’s Award.

Between April 2015 and March 2017, a committee was formed to actualize the proposal, and various focus groups, training, and workshops were conducted. Through the efforts, awareness about the LGBTQ+ issues and gender and sexuality issues more broadly gained momentum on campus.

In April 2017, the Gender and Sexuality Center (GS Center) was established as a safe space/resource center under the Student Diversity Center, along with the preexisting Intercultural Communication Center (ICC) and now the Accessibility Resource Center (ARC).

Waseda University aims to create an academic community where diverse individuals, regardless of nationality, gender, and/or disabilities, can coexist within the university and be involved in learning, education and research, and career from their own perspectives, thereby creating new ideas that will lead to the further evolution of the university.  The Student Diversity Center will work towards achieving this goal based on the following two principles:

  • To ensure that the diverse groups of minority students, who could be subject to disadvantages in various aspects of campus life, are able to focus on their studies without fear of such disadvantages.
  • To create a campus where all members of the university respect diverse values and ways of life.

The GS Center's Mission

1.We welcome: consultation, support, and a safer space
  • a home for LGBTQ+ students and their allies (*)
  • a free space open to anyone interested in the topics of gender and sexuality
  • a safe, confidential counseling space for students to address issues related to gender and sexuality
2.We connect: assessment and problem-solving
  • identify issues on campus through student dialogue
  • resolve issues through campus-wide partnerships
3.We inform: training and education
  • provide training to increase allies of the LGBTQ+ community
  • educate students, staff, and faculty members
4.We reach out: events and collaboration
  • host events related to gender and sexuality
  • raise awareness through our website and social media
  • partner with external organizations on collaborative events

*The GS Center perceives an ally as someone who acknowledges their own privilege and actively utilizes it as a resource to support movements and equity for LGBTQ+ people and related communities.
