【Waseda Journalism School】Special Symposium Turning People Against People: the Psychology of Localism, Media and Democracy in Hong Kong(2018.11.22)

The speaker Evan Fowler a Hong Kong native, a columnist and co-director of Hong Kong Free Press. The talk will cover 4 key areas:

  • The relationship between the press and peoples of Hong Kong, the changing media landscape, and why this matters.
  • The challenge to HK’s Chinese identity and the rise and nature of HK localism.
  • The changing culture of politics and protest, from 1989-2017.
  • Identity, patriotism and economic interest: the psychological impact on a people.

Speaker: Evan Fowler, a Hong Kong native, is a writer and co-founder of Hong Kong Free Press. He ran the Hong Kong Identity Project between 2007-2015, and has helped establish three online papers, including the Chinese language House News, which at the time of its closure in 2014, was the second most read paper in Hong Kong. Mr. Fowler is now resident in the UK.
