Graduate Lecture Series: Comparative Political Institutions
We are pleased to announce an upcoming graduate-level lecture series titled Comparative Political Institutions, to be delivered in English by Professors Matt Golder and Sona Golder of Pennsylvania State University. This series explores how political institutions address fundamental political challenges, using both theoretical and comparative approaches.
Over the course of the series, we will examine how institutions respond to six core political problems:
- Credible commitment problems
- Preference aggregation problems
- Conflict resolution problems
- Coalition formation problems
- Delegation and accountability problems
- Coordination and cooperation problems
The first session will focus on credible commitment problems, with an in-depth discussion of power-sharing agreements in the contexts of democracy, dictatorship, and federalism. Subsequent sessions will address either preference aggregation or conflict resolution—details will be confirmed soon.
Schedule (All sessions held from 3:00 PM to 4:40 PM, followed by office hours)
- July 7 (Mon) 3-608
- July 8 (Tue) 11-1110
- July 9 (Wed) 3-1116
- July 10 (Thu) 3-1116
- July 18 (Fri) 3-1116
- July 19 (Sat) 3-1116
This lecture series is highly recommended for graduate students interested in institutional design, comparative politics, or game theory. It will offer a strong analytical foundation and an opportunity for engaging discussion on some of the most pressing issues in the study of political institutions.
