Event Report:Etoki (Buddhist Picture-Storytelling) in New York

Etoki Workshop at Columbia University

March 10 (Mon) : Etoki Workshop – Illustrated Mountains as a Sacred Place: Mt. Meru, Vulture Peak, Kumano and Mt. Fuji

This workshop, organized as a lead-up to the Etoki Forum taking place the following day, explored mountain worship in Japan, representations of sacred lands and mountains, and the relationship between saints (Prince Shōtoku) and etoki through painting and literature. The event, which followed the program below, drew roughly thirty participants, including researchers and graduate students, for a lively exchange of ideas.

Installing hanging scrolls at the Columbia University Etoki Forum

March 11 (Tues): Etoki (Buddhist Picture-Storytelling) from Japan: Performance and Music by Yamaoka Bumyō, Masuda Eishin, and Nagino Akihito with Hanging Scrolls of the Life of Prince Shōtoku

This event featured three etoki (picture-storytelling) masters, who are also Buddhist monks, in the first-ever presentation of etoki, including a performance accompanied by biwa (lute) music, in North America. The venue also hosted an exhibition of hanging scrolls, including full-scale, high-resolution reproductions of “Shōtoku Taishi eden” (Illustrated Biography of Prince Shōtoku, held at Honshōji Temple) and “Zenkōji nyorai eden” (Illustrated Biography of the Buddha of Zenkōji Temple). Nearly 100 people attended the event, which followed the program outlined below.
