Q1. What made you decide to come to Waseda to study?
Waseda University is famous all over the world, and Waseda University’s philosophy is committed to cultivating students’ global perspective. It offers many international programs each year, exchange opportunities with partner universities around the world, and has a diverse student body representing different countries and cultures. This global perspective attracts students who are eager to broaden their horizons and develop global networks, and it was me who arrived.

Q2What are you currently studying at Waseda?
According to the training plan of Waseda University, I learned data analysis, data modeling, management strategy and other related knowledge under the teaching and research department of Prof. Jin Qun and Prof. Fan Hara.

Q3. Please describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class.
The most unforgettable experience was going to plant vegetables and weeding with Mr. Ogihara. I heard that this farm was specialized in delivering food materials for a restaurant opened by some disabled people. Mr. Fan Hara often brought his students to do volunteer work here, which made me feel warm.

Q4. Tell us about your campus life at Waseda University.
During this period of study, I feel the rich and colorful community culture of the university, and the university really attaches great importance to sports competition. We will have baseball games with zemi as the unit, and there will be inter-school competitions similar to the Morning Qing game for us to attend, etc. The campus also often holds various parks and forums, and the life of the university is wonderful.

Q5. What did you gain from studying at Waseda University?
I think what I gained most during this period of exchange is that I got to know friends from different countries around the world. I found that the global village really exists, and fate makes us meet. Friendship and affection are the most precious things.

Q6. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as an international student?
As an international exchange student, I think it is easy to make friends. Although my Japanese is not good, English, as a global language, is enough for me to have a normal daily communication with my classmates. In addition, I think the classmates and teachers here are very friendly, which gives me enough courage to talk with classmates from different countries.

Q7What differences do you perceive between Japanese and your universities?
If there are any differences between Japanese and Chinese universities, I think Japanese universities are probably more open. It seems that everyone can enter and exit the campus, whether they are older students or not, while in China, it seems that they are not so open. In addition, I feel that Japanese universities will be a little more international, and the cultural diversity will be greater.

Q9What surprised you the most when you came to Japan?
I think the most surprising thing to me is the Japanese garbage classification system, which is so detailed that I am a little unbelievable. At the same time, I am very impressed that Japan is clean everywhere, and the requirements for hygiene are very high, which makes people very comfortable.

As a member of the team, attending the school softball game with my class was one of my most memorable memories. In addition to training and games, we will also spend valuable rest time together. We will share our sports experience, exchange skills and learn from each other. This kind of team friendship and cooperation is not limited to the stadium, it extends to our daily life.

Q4. Tell us about your campus life at Waseda University.
My campus life at Waseda University has been incredibly rewarding. The libraries provide a conducive atmosphere for studying, with an extensive collection of resources. The sports fields and gymnasiums offer opportunities to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle. As an international student in Japan, I have gained valuable insights into AI knowledge, Japan’s emphasis on technological development, the concept of constructing Society 5.0, nurturing humanistic qualities, and advanced social ideals. Additionally, my exposure to Japanese culture and society has broadened my horizons and influenced my personal growth. Overall, these experiences will greatly impact my future academic and professional endeavors.

Q7What differences do you perceive between Japanese and your universities?
In Japan, schools primarily serve as places for learning and activities, while students have separate accommodations outside of the campus. This setup allows the campus to focus more on academic and educational resources, providing students with an environment dedicated to studying. On the other hand, I feel that Chinese universities are more like large communities. In China, many students reside in on-campus dormitories, turning the campus into their home. The school provides accommodations and living facilities, creating a sense of community and family atmosphere. In this environment, students can build deep friendships with roommates and experience shared living, learning, and personal growth. However, whether in Japan or China, schools remain important places for student learning. Regardless of whether the dormitories are on campus or not, we, as students, can utilize the resources and academic support provided by the school to pursue knowledge and personal development. Each country’s universities have their own unique educational philosophies and cultures, allowing every student to gain valuable learning experiences in different environments. Nevertheless, both in Japan and China, schools are important places for student learning, providing resources and support for academic pursuits. Each country’s universities have their own distinct educational philosophies and cultures, offering valuable learning experiences for students in diverse environments.

Q8How would you describe the dorm life – rooms, dining options, location, social opportunities?
I found Japanese dormitories to be incredibly quiet, respectful, privacy-oriented, and yet very comfortable. The tranquility of the dormitory provided me with a sense of peace and security. Residents placed a high priority on maintaining a quiet environment, respecting each other’s rest and study time. This serene atmosphere allowed me to focus on my tasks, whether it was studying, working, or simply relaxing, in a peaceful space. Living in a Japanese dormitory, I have experienced the healthy, hygienic, and nutritionally balanced food options available. They offer a variety of nutritious ingredients, including fresh vegetables, fruits, quality proteins, and grains. The preparation and cooking processes prioritize cleanliness and food safety, ensuring the freshness and quality of the ingredients. Additionally, the dormitory meals are carefully planned and balanced to provide ample nutrition. The dormitory is conveniently located, with easy access to transportation and convenient shopping options. Additionally, there is a spacious park nearby, providing an ideal place for exercise and relaxation. I can take walks, go for runs, ride a bicycle, or engage in outdoor activities with friends in this park.

Q9What surprised you the most when you came to Japan?
The level of cleanliness and hygiene in Japan is truly impressive. Whether it was the streets, public transportation, or even public restrooms, everything was impeccably clean and well-maintained. I was astounded by the attention to detail and the collective effort put into keeping the surroundings clean. It created a sense of comfort and tranquility, making me appreciate the commitment of the Japanese people to maintaining a clean and pleasant environment. Additionally, I was pleasantly surprised by the friendliness and helpfulness of the people in Japan. From the moment I arrived, I encountered numerous instances where strangers went out of their way to assist me and make me feel welcome. Whether it was asking for directions, ordering food at a restaurant, or seeking help in stores, people were patient, polite, and genuinely willing to lend a hand. The warmth and kindness I experienced from the Japanese people left a lasting impression on me and made me feel at ease in a new and unfamiliar environment. These initial experiences of witnessing the cleanliness and experiencing the friendliness in Japan were truly eye-opening. They highlighted the importance placed on creating a comfortable and welcoming society, and it made me appreciate the values and cultural norms that contribute to such positive experiences.

One of my memorable experiences was farming activities. With the guidance of Professor Atsushi Ogihara, we experienced removing weeds, loose soil and pruning branches, which is a novel experience to me. When we know that the vegetables produced by the land will be donated to local welfare organizations to help children and disabled people, we realize the humanistic spirit of professors and school. When we are doing research, we should not only pay attention to the research itself, but also pay attention to all kinds of groups in need.

I think sincere and mutual respect is the basis of making friends. I believe heart to heart communication can help me make more friends.
