The development and growth of Tokyo Senmon Gakko, the predecessor of Waseda University, were supported by a group of young pioneers: TAKATA Sanae, AMANO Tameyuki, ICHISHIMA Kenkichi (Shunjo), and TSUBOUCHI Yuzo (Shoyo). These individuals are collectively referred to as the “Four Sages of Waseda.”

This exhibition commemorates the 80th anniversary of the passing of ICHISHIMA Kenkichi, one of the Four Sages, by revisiting the early days of Waseda University through his diaries, essays, and other writings. The exhibition highlights episodes from the university’s founding and its development as observed and recorded by ICHISHIMA.

ICHISHIMA, also known as a collector, left behind extensive records and materials that serve as significant testimonies to the history of Waseda University and the activities of OKUMA Shigenobu. These records are now recognized as invaluable resources in understanding the university’s history and are being utilized in the ongoing 150-Year History Compilation Project at the Waseda University History Museum.
