On April 8, Waseda University launched the Reconstruction Support Office for the Great East Japan Earthquake (Director: President Kaoru Kamata, Secretariat: General Affairs Division), with commitment to extend support for the reconstruction necessitated by the Earthquake.

The March 11, 2011 devastating earthquake brought about an unprecedented catastrophe to the eastern Japan, generating ferocious tsunami waves and setting off a nuclear crisis. Waseda University immediately established the Headquarters for Disaster Control. In coordination with Faculties and Institutes of the University and while trying to confirm the safety of all students, alumni, and faculty/staff members, we have exerted efforts on the development of emergency measures, which include a tuition reduction/exemption program, and on the promotion of energy saving on campus.

The newly established Office, which will comprise of experts from on and off campus when appropriate in addition to the Executive Directors and Senior Deans, will fulfill function independent of the Headquarters for Disaster Control. Mobilizing intellectual resources of the University, it will provide support activities for recovery from the widespread devastation. The Office will also serve as a one-stop establishment, which centralizes and communicates reconstruction-related information via the University website.
