The entire University community of students, faculty, and staff is in extreme grief for the tremendous casualties and losses incurred in the wake of the recent earthquake and subsequent disaster. We sincerely hope that the safety and whereabouts of those who are yet missing will be confirmed at the earliest possible time.

At this time, Waseda University regretfully informs you of its decision to not hold the commencement for AY 2010 scheduled for March 25th and 26th at Memorial Hall. The decision came amid apprehension at this point in time that attendance for ceremony will be severely influenced by possible chaos over transportation, which has been in disarray due to the implementation of scheduled rolling blackout. The University also weighs risk of an assembly of a number of graduates and attendees for the commencement seriously, as we are experiencing ongoing aftershocks.

Likewise, the Diploma Presentation Ceremonies to be organized by each undergraduate/graduate school will also be called off.

The University has arranged the following schedule during which the graduates will be able to receive their diplomas. Please bring your student ID and come to the venue to be announced at a later date and which will be designated according to each undergraduate and graduate school. You are by all means encouraged to work around your schedule and come on either the 26th (Sat) or the 27th (Sun) so as to help relieve the strain on the public transportation system.

Thursday, March 24, 2011: from 11:00 to 15:00 Friday, March 25, 2011:       from 11:00 to 15:00 Saturday, March 26, 2011:  from 10:00 to 16:00 Sunday, March 27, 2011:    from 10:00 to 16:00

*Schedule is subject to change. Please confirm the latest information on the website of each school and graduate school, etc.

Further, a party organized by Waseda University Alumni Association to be held on the eve of the commencement (March 24) will also be cancelled.

Our deepest sympathy and prayers go out to all suffering from the scope of this devastating disaster. In a sincere hope for swift recovery of the people and areas affected, Waseda University is determined to provide all possible support necessary.

Starting March 25, the University will be webcasting on the University website a video footage delivering the message from the President, Kaoru Kamata, addressed to the graduates and those who have completed their studies.
