The student from Waseda University’s sumo club, who was arrested on November 14th for violating the Cannabis Control Law, was indicted on December 5th. Waseda University is deeply ashamed to learn of these reports despite Japan’s continued efforts to eradicate cannabis use. The University considers this a matter of grave concern, and we extend our deepest apologies.

Waseda University will judge whether we lacked foresight or did not take proper measures to prevent such occurrences, confirm the facts regarding this case, and take strict action to deal with the situation. The University acknowledges the student’s arrest on November 14th and regarding the sumo club, to which the student belongs, we ordered the suspension of all activities effective the same day while we confirm details. However, in response to the indictment of the student on December 5th, the University is considering establishing an extended fixed period of suspension. In order to clarify the details, we will thoroughly investigate to ensure there were no additional involved parties amongst the sumo club members or dormitory residents.

Waseda University will once again warn all students against the use of dangerous, illegal substances and will continue to do our utmost to take the proper measures to prevent any recurrence.
