Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics, Professor Shuji Nakamura Visited Waseda University
Prof. Shuji Nakamura, physicist, Professor at University of California, Santa Barbara, and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics for his 2014 invention of blue light-emitting diodes (LED) and blue laser diode, visited Waseda University to visit with President Aiji Tanaka.
In November 2022, Professor Nakamura founded a new startup, Blue Laser Fusion Inc. (BLF), based on their own proprietary invention of laser technology, with Waseda University Ventures’ (WUV) General partner, Dr. Hiroaki Ohta. Their ultimate goal is to commercialize clean energy through laser nuclear fusion.
Professor Nakamura explained the company’s plan for high-power laser generation method that BLF is currently attempting to develop, as well as about how to construct an entire reactor system that will generate much less harmful radiation. The research in clean energy through laser nuclear fusion matches well with one of the core initiatives, Waseda Carbon Net Zero Challenge 2030s started in 2021; therefore, Waseda would like to support and contribute to the success of BLF through potential joint research and collaborations.
