H.E. Mr. Egils Levits, President of the Republic of Latvia, will visit Waseda University to give a special lecture on the challenges in modern democracies from Latvia’s perspective.
Born in 1955, President Levits graduated from the Faculty of Law, Philosophy, and Public Science at the University of Hamburg. He actively participated in the restoration of Latvia in 1989-1991 and was the author of the concept of the Declaration on the Restoration of Independence of Latvia. He was also the first Minister of Justice aafter full restoration of the Constitution and the Ambassador of Latvia to Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Switzerland. He was the first Latvian judge in the European Court of Human Rights (1995-2004) and in the European Court of Justice (2004-2019). He has been the President of Latvia since July 2019.
