The Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum is currently hosting the “Magic Lantern: Archeology of Projection Media” exhibition. A magic lantern is an over 300 year old device that enlarges and projects paintings and photographs inscribed onto glass slides. Candles and lamps were originally used for light in magic lanterns but gas and electric light later became popular light sources. With its slide-changing mechanics, the magic lantern is said to be the predecessor to today’s slide projectors and power point presentations.

This exhibition consists of three sections: the history of the magic lantern, the spread of projection images, and the return to projection media. Interactive exhibitions are on display, allowing visitors to experience the allure of the magic lantern first-hand. This exhibition is located on the second floor of the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum and will be on display until August 2 (Sunday).
