Kaoru Kamata
President, Waseda University
Congratulations to all newly admitted students.
Since its founding in 1882, Waseda University has continued a 130 year old tradition supported by the three principles of academic freedom, practical innovation and enlightened citizenship, and has produced many talented graduates.
Today’s society, including you who will follow in the footsteps of our prestigious alumni across the world, faces a number of global challenges. In order to resolve issues such as regional conflict and terrorism, environmental pollution, global warming and widespread poverty, we must work together beyond national borders. As the only nation to experience the dropping of an atomic bomb and as a country that has advocated for peace for 70 years, there are concerns that Japan is losing its international status. Despite these circumstances, I want all students to receive a comprehensive education, develop expertise and a well-rounded character, and move forward with courage. Waseda University is an environment that can train and educate such global leaders.
To commemorate Waseda University’s 150th anniversary, a long term plan called Waseda Vision 150 was introduced in November 2012. Waseda Vision 150 addresses three main points: what students gain through education and research activities during their stay, in what way Waseda University’s research contributes to world happiness, and how graduates contribute to global and local communities. Waseda University is developing necessary strategies to reach this vision and doing its best to implement them.
Waseda Vision 150 is not a one-sided plan that the university creates and students accept. The Waseda Vision 150 Student Competition, held every year since 2012, encourages students to propose detailed plans in relation to Waseda Vision 150. Some of these plans have been carried out and completed. One example is the reconstruction of the Dramakan Theater which will open in April 2015.
I sincerely hope that in the vast ocean that is Waseda University, you are able to find the courage to create a new era and discover what you want to accomplish and who you wish to become.
